Both internships and apprenticeships are meant to help students or entry level professionals gain expertise in an industry. An apprenticeship is a paid, on-the-job-training opportunity for someone to learn the skills needed for a career while working towards professional qualifications. Apprenticeship programs focus on teaching specific skills needed to become a full-time employee, whereas internships are generally short-term, sometimes unpaid, temporary opportunities to gain experience.
The CUNY/Jobs Council College Apprenticeship is embedded in targeted associate degrees that lead directly to in-demand jobs. The College Apprenticeship is paid, credit-bearing and counts toward your degree requirements. Other apprenticeships generally do not count for college credit and require extra time outside the degree. Others are offered by particular companies and do not necessarily lead directly to a job. And others are sponsored by industry associations or unions linked to specific trade jobs such as electricians, machinists, or carpenters, and registered by the Department of Labor.
